A week in the life of a second year music student

Monday

08.50 Run to Music Faculty top speed to hand in analysis essay on time, having slept in. Not a great start to the week.

10.00 Made it back to Selwyn in time to attend Music and Science supervision.  A bit windswept but I’m there, unlike my bikeless companion who has to trek out from Girton.

12.00 Handel Lecture.

13.15 Mad dash to Clare College, quick set up to perform a half an hour programme for a lunchtime concert. After concert – hungry. Nip to Boots for meal deal (only £3.29, with lots to choose from!) and then back to college.  Reply to emails, sit and recover from the morning with tea. Nip to library before it shuts to get out an optimistic number of overnight loans.

Evening Skype home, make dinner, chat on Facebook to a fellow Selwyn musician (who lives in the next block – standard behaviour) and try to make a start on a week’s worth of reading for essays.

Tuesday

07.30 Up at a more respectable hour, have a good stab at some fugue before  I remember my neighbour is probably not going to appreciate that at this time. Make sure overnight loans are back on time (predictably, half the books returned unread).

Afternoon Tonal Composition supervision, reading for essays.

17.15 Choir rehearsal, sing Evensong at 6.30pm.

19.30 CUMS orchestra rehearsal in faculty.

20.30 Try to get my head around Schoenberg and pitch class sets for supervision tomorrow.

Wednesday

09.45 Analysis lecture in faculty, followed immediately by analysis supervision. Admin for music society weekly concert takes up the rest of the morning.

14.00 Rehearsal with my wind quintet, then home to finish my Handel essay before choir.

17.15 Choir rehearsal (essay not finished).

19.00-22.00 Stewarding at West Road Concert Hall.

Thursday

Morning Speedy finish to essay so it’s emailed in on time. Booked music room to get some flute practice done.

10.30 Singing lesson.

Afternoon Handel supervision at the other side of town (cycle). Go to library on way home to finish reading for Music and Science essay. Leave enough time to get changed for formal!

17.15 Choir rehearsal.

18.30 Evensong.

20.00 Straight to Formal dinner in Hall after choir, lots of fun and merriment.

Friday

Morning Write M&S essay before….

10.00 Tonal Composition lecture.

11.30 Music and Science Lecture.

Afternoon Hand in essay then spend a couple of hours in a practise room in the faculty, finishing fugue and playing on the nice pianos!

15.30 Visit Fulbourn Hospital with CaMEO (the music outreach group) to play for the patients.

Saturday

Morning Get up early to cycle to train station, going to London.

10.00 Flute lesson.

13.00 Back in time to catch another train to sing Evensong in Ely Cathedral with choir.

Evening Watching Dr Who as soon as it becomes available on iPlayer with friends and cooking something together so it’s more exciting than pasta for one!

Sunday

09.40 Audition for Queen’s May Ball with wind quintet.

Afternoon Take my bike into town centre, buy food and a few other bits and pieces. Time to visit friends at other colleges!

16.15 Choir rehearsal, Evensong at 6pm. Chapel supper afterwards, a quick turnaround before going to set up for concert.

20.30 SCMS Recital in Selwyn Hall.

22.30 Hand keys back to plodge and relax in the college bar for a bit before the start of another busy week!
