Elizabeth Anderson is an internationally acclaimed electroacoustic composer whose work spans acousmatic, mixed, radiophonic and multimedia formats. For over 35 years, her compositions have been featured in prominent venues and festivals around the world. She has collaborated with photographers, videographers and, most recently, the contemporary dancer, Michèle Noiret. At the heart of Elizabeth’s artistic vision is a fascination with the sonic expression of creative tension found in dialectics and the sonic expression of space – from the vastness of the universe to the intimacy of cellular life. Her music explores these realms while inviting listeners into her imaginative world.
Elizabeth Anderson’s music has been honored in numerous international competitions. Underlying her creative and pedagogical approach is her research on the perception of electroacoustic music from a poietic and esthesic perspective, to which end she conceived models to explore the meaning of electroacoustic music as constructed by the composer and the listener. Her research has been published in Austria, France (online), Germany and in Mexico.
She developed a complete curriculum for electroacoustic composition at the Académie de Soignies (Belgium) from 1994 to 2002. She is currently a professor in the department of electroacoustic music at ARTS2 / École Supérieure des Arts in Mons, Belgium where she teaches multiphonic acousmatic composition and the semiology of electroacoustic music.
Elizabeth Anderson received a Bachelor of Arts degree in music from Gettysburg College (Pennsylvania, USA) and a Master of Music in composition from the Peabody Institute (Maryland, USA). She travelled to Brussels, Belgium in 1987 to pursue a diploma in instrumental composition at the Conservatoire royal de Bruxelles, and while exploring instrumental techniques discovered electronic music. In 1993 she completed a Final Diploma in electronic music composition at the Koninklijk Conservatorium Antwerpen followed by diplomas in electroacoustic composition at the Conservatoire royal de Mons. She earned a doctorate in electroacoustic composition at City University London in 2011. Funding for her doctorate was provided by an Overseas Research Scholarship as well as subsidies from the Fondation SPES and the BFWG Charitable Foundation.
In 2017, she founded the company HearT snc/vof with David Baltuch to promote their music, research and pedagogy.
In March 2022, she was elected as a full member of the Class of Arts at the Royal Academy of Belgium. In May, 2025, she received a doctorate honoris causa from Gettysburg College.
