Faculty of Music

Marta Gentilucci is a composer of instrumental, vocal and electronic music. Her formal training as an opera singer influenced and formed her being a composer, as well as her attraction to the inner structure of sound, its way of resonating in space and oscillating within a timespan, its metamorphosis in color and 'shape'. She is particularly interested in vocal music and technology, and the different possibilities of building acoustic and virtual spaces. Her deep artistic necessity is to create a musical space where music and sounds are perceived not only as an intellectual construct, but also as a physical sensation.
She pursued a master in vocal arts as a soprano in Italy and obtained a master in composition and computer music at the State University of Music and Performing Arts Stuttgart (DE). She holds a PhD in composition from Harvard University.
Her music has been internationally performed by renowned ensembles and festivals.
She was in residence at IRCAM, Experimentalstudio Freiburg, Electronic Studio of the Akademie der Künste Berlin, and at the Harvard Radcliffe Institute. Among her most recent works, two joint commissions by IRCAM and Neue Vocalsolisten for the MANIFESTE Festival 2020 and the ECLAT Festival 2021, and a commission by the Biennale di Venezia 2021. In 2021/22, she was in residence at the French Academy in Rome – Villa Medici.
She has been newly appointed as Assistant Professor in Composition at the Faculty of Music at the University of Cambridge and Official Fellow in Music Composition at the Girton College Cambridge
