Faculty of Music

Who decides what I listen to next?

We are in a new musical market place. With Spotify radio, Last.fm and YouTube continuous play, listeners no longer have complete control of their playlist. The choice is made for us by algorithms, staff curators, or both. As a result, the big businesses that provide these services can decide upon who gets listened to, and who gets left on the shelf. Whilst this benefits some, independent artists feel they lose out. Dr Kariann Goldschmitt and Dr Ananay Aguilar (Faculty of Music) offer a practical exploration of these themes bringing insight into this complex world. Suitable for ages 15+.
