We are delighted to announce that Benedict Taylor will take up an Associate Professorship in Theory & Analysis in September 2026. Benedict's research encompasses the analysis and philosophy of music from the 18th to the mid-20th centuries; his background specialisation in German and British music is counterbalanced by research interests in a wide range of European repertory, blurring distinctions between serious, light, and popular musics. In general, his work seeks to meld close analytical engagement with wider aesthetic questions of meaning. He is author of books on music and temporality, on cyclic form, and on music and subjectivity; his monographs and articles have also brought a belated analytical spotlight to the music of Fanny Hensel, Clara Schumann, Edvard Grieg, Samuel Coleridge-Taylor, and Arthur Sullivan.
Benedict comes to Cambridge from the University of Edinburgh, where he has taught since 2013, lately as Professor of the Analysis and Philosophy of Music. He has been co-editor of Music & Letters for nearly a decade, while his other editorial roles include oversight of Cambridge University Press's 'Music in Context' series and serving on the editorial boards of Music Analysis and Music Theory Spectrum.
