The third edition of the Faculty of Music’s electro//acoustic day will take place from 9.30am-8.30pm on Thursday 19 March, as part of the Sounds New Festival, a festival celebrating new music across the University of Cambridge (6-22 March).
Marta Gentilucci, Artistic Director of the electro//acoustic day, introduces the event:
'As electro//acoustic day enters its third edition, we continue to build on a distinctive artistic vision that brings classical and contemporary repertoire into close cohabitation alongside new compositional voices and electronic music. From its inception, the event has been a platform where the traditions of acoustic performance engage in creative dialogue with cutting-edge electronic sound worlds, offering audiences an opportunity to experience music beyond conventional boundaries.
Under the overarching concept of unfolding, this year’s programme deepens that journey: extending the repertoire across genres, inviting international guests, and highlighting new works that reflect a global landscape of creative practice. The day unfolds not simply as a sequence of performances but as an evolving sonic ecosystem — one that embraces diversity of form, medium, and cultural perspective.
At the heart of electro//acoustic day is a commitment to engaging with our contemporary world. Through immersive concerts, installations, and conversations between artists and audience, the event invites listeners to inhabit sound more fully, to explore how music can resonate with pressing artistic and societal questions, and to participate in a dynamic exchange of ideas that bridges artistic creators and the public.'
In addition to an all-day audio-visual installation, and the performance of works by finalists in the Carmack composition Award, there will be three concerts, including performances by RIOT ensemble, accordionist Margit Kern, and the University of Cambridge Schola Cantorum; pre-concert conversations with composer Monty Adkins and conductor Edmon Colomer; and music ranging from the Italian Trecento, to Luciano Berio, Aaron Holloway-Nahum, George Lewis, Kaija Saariaho, and UK premieres of works by Marta Gentilucci, Dániel Péter Biró, and Tim Watts (world premiere).
