Philip Leverhulme Prize awarded to Dr Peter McMurray

We are delighted to announce that Dr Peter McMurray has been awarded a prestigious Philip Leverhulme Prize in the Visual and Performing Arts. The Prize confers £100,000 over three years to support the recipient’s research. Dr McMurray will be pursuing an ethnographic project on the music of refugee communities currently in Greece, Turkey, Lebanon and Germany having fled from Syria, Iraq and Afghanistan. Dr McMurray’s work will combine research into touring orchestras and rock bands with exploration of informal music-making, dance, and poetry recitation in refugee shelters, to produce a broad-based study of refugee soundscapes and the ways those refugees both create and listen to them.
