Mainstream classical concert culture today ‘disembodies’ music and distances performers from their audience, argues Professor Bettina Varwig. Drawing on very different ideas about music and the body from the early modern period, she aims to transform the experience for all involved by restoring classical music's powerful relationship with our bodies.
In collaboration with Professor Margaret Faultless, tenor Nicholas Mulroy and musicians at the Royal Academy of Music, this theory was put into practice in a two-day workshop centred on Bach’s St John Passion, the film of which has just been released alongside an article in The Guardian outlining the project.
The film is linked above (please enable social and marketing cookies to view); alternatively, please find it on the project website here.
