Performance at Cambridge
The music faculty is a centre of excellence for musical performance. Led by the Directors of Performance and involving many of the wider faculty, students are encouraged to set performance in the broader context of academic study, as well as being challenged to engage in questions of communication, emotion and listening. Performance classes are led by the Directors of Performance and a distinguished roster of visiting musicians, that has recently included Tomasz Ritter, Ib Hausmann, John Graham-Hall, Andrew Skidmore, Alisdair Hogarth, Karen Jones and Joseph Middleton.
Performance opportunities exist in the faculty, throughout the Collegiate University and through the university-wide Centre for Music Performance, with the directors of performance and other faculty members playing a central part of this offering. Recent highlights include welcoming Sir George Benjamin, Britten Sinfonia and the Fidelio Trio to lead a concert in celebration of the life of Frances Goehr, Quarter Bozzini (as part of the Composers’ Workshops) as well as a performance of J.S Bach St John Passion, with Maggie Faultless (Director of Performance) and Bettina Varwig (Professor of Early Modern Music) with the University Chamber Choir and Collegium Musicum.
