Biography

After studying music at the University of York, Nigel Yandell gained a postgraduate scholarship at Wadham College, Oxford, where his doctoral research focused principally on eighteenth and early nineteenth century keyboard music in Russia.

Since then his research interests have expanded into new areas, including aspects of European music publishing and historical performance practice. Dr Yandell is an experienced solo and collaborative pianist, and has recorded, performed and lectured widely in the UK and Europe.  He frequently works as a coach with young professional singers and instrumentalists, and has a particular interest in the relationship between text and music, as well as forms of keyboard improvisation within a historical context. Formerly a Director of the London Sinfonietta, Palace Opera and Pro Corda, he is currently a Director of the Stradivari Trust and a representative of CUMS within the recently established University Centre for Music Performance.

Dr Yandell's areas of teaching/supervision across the Cambridge Tripos focuses principally on practical and technical skills. These include performance/recital preparation, advanced keyboard skills (including continuo playing and song accompaniment), aural development and general musicianship - as well as eighteenth century historical studies.
