CMPS Workshop: Improvising rhythm in performance

Jeremy Thurlow, Robinson College
Stephanie Childress, St John’s College
Dan Tidhar, Faculty of Music

Performers always shape music through their interpretation of rhythm. But what if a composer’s score allows – requires – the performer to improvise the rhythm entirely? The result is a real-time ‘composing’ of the overall shape, pacing, highs and lows, in performance. We will hear and discuss music by Jeremy Thurlow and Couperin, in contrasting live recreations by Stephanie Childress and Dan Tidhar.
