Faculty of Music

As an introduction to a practical class later this term, in this session Martin will present his doctoral research, looking at the theoretical development of a new conceptual lens for performance anxiety which views it as an opportunity for artistic growth. He will share his experience of applying this in performance and how it can be used in music coaching. The subsequent practical class is on Thursday, 24 February.

Martin Lawrence studied physics at the University of York before pursuing a career playing the horn. He has been second horn in the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment since 1995 and also plays with the all the other London-based period instrument orchestras. In addition, he has developed 'Free Your Playing', an approach that looks at physical, mental and creative issues for musicians, which he teaches as a private practice and on courses. He completed his PhD at the Guildhall in 2020.
