Dr Golan Gur, who is a Newton International Fellow researching on music and aesthetic culture in the former German Democratic Republic, has won the Austrian Musicological Society’s 2015 Publication Prize for an outstanding contribution on music in and from Austria. The Prize was awarded for the essay “The Other Marxism: Georg Knepler and the Anthroplogy of Music” which will appear soon in Musicologica Austriaca: Journal for Austrian Music Studies. The article deals with the East German musicologist Georg Knepler (1906–2003) and his attempt to develop a materialist musicology and music aesthetics grounded in his reading of key Marxist texts and the (then) new scientific research fields of cybernetics, evolutionary linguistics and bioacoustics.
