Stephen Wilford

It is a great pleasure to announce that the Faculty of Music will welcome Dr Stephen Wilford from 1 September 2022 as Temporary Assistant Professor in Ethnomusicology, Popular Music and Sound Studies. Dr Wilford conducts research on the musics and sounds of Algeria, in the past and present, from Arab-Andalusi musical practices during the colonial period to the contemporary Franco-Algerian hip hop scene. He studied at the University of Aberdeen, Leeds Conservatoire, and Goldsmiths, University of London, before completing his AHRC-funded PhD at City, University of London. He has been a Research Associate at Cambridge since 2018, as part of the ERC-funded project ‘Past and Present Musical Encounters Across the Strait of Gibraltar’, and a Junior Research Fellow of Wolfson College Cambridge since 2019. With articles published in twentieth-century music, in Journal@IASPM, and forthcoming in Ethnomusicology Forum, he is currently completing a monograph and co-editing two volumes. He serves as Treasurer of the British Forum for Ethnomusicology and Honorary Secretary of the Royal Anthropological Institute’s Ethnomusicology-Ethnochoreology Committee, and is a member of the Society for Ethnomusicology’s Virtual Chapter.
