Mary Collins’ Introduction to Baroque Dance

The final class of the term is open to all, and no experience of dancing is necessary. Mary will deliver a practical introduction to the popular dances which underpin Baroque and later repertoire. By recognising the features, patterns and characters of each dance form, musicians can discover ways to realise and interpret dance-based music with a fresh perspective, resulting in exciting, historically-informed performances. The workshop will include a basic introduction to the steps and style of key dances.

Comfortable, unrestricted clothing is advisable, as is footwear which permits the dancers to raise the heels and move easily on the balls of the feet.

There are seven fabulous Practising Performance events this term, and, by popular request, three of these are conducting masterclasses. The conducting classes are also open to pianists and others, ideal opportunities to develop repetiteur skills that are essential in the music profession. All this term’s classes are open to the public.
